Sought-After Living Space

SOUGHT-AFTER LIVING SPACE EMERGES FROM LOWER-LEVEL RENOVATION

The basement is now a space that the whole family loves.

After nearly two decades, it was time for a change. Steve and Chris Sabean moved into their beautiful home in West Montrose 19 years ago. The house is now 32 years old, and a full one at that. It's home to a family of four, including Steve and Chris' adult son and teenage daughter. For years, the Sabean family basement had been used as a play area for the kids. Eventually, it became a large, cold space that was barely utilized.

When it came time to finish renovating in September 2021, the couple was looking to create a more adult space where they could be comfortable entertaining friends and family.

Way-May took the couple’s vision and made it a reality. The basement is now a clean, modern space that includes a spare bedroom/office, workout room, kitchenette, bathroom, family room, and more. This functional space also features many unique details that make it perfect for the Sabean family. One main feature that is special to the family is the sliding barn door with a smaller cat door at the bottom.

When Steve and Chris decided that it was time to renovate their basement they talked to a few different businesses. Ultimately, choosing Way-Mar was an easy decision. Not only was Way-Mar Project Manager Paul Fretz a friend of theirs, but the flexibility that Way-Mar offered when it came to choosing materials and other contractors had them sold. Allowing them to use their electrician and choose materials from anywhere are just two small examples of how Way-Mar’s flexibility made a difference for the Sabeans.

It kind of feels like you’re friends by the time you’re done.

It was truly a community effort that made this space come to life. With the help and expertise of a few of their neighbours, the process of picking details, such as wall colour and tiles, was made easy for the Sabeans. In addition to their neighbours, Chris credits Way-Mar, Chervin Kitchen & Bath, and Pinterest for making the design process flow so smoothly.

When it came to the actual renovation, the Sabeans were thrilled with their Way-Mar experience. They describe the renovation team as friendly and professional. “It kind of feels like you’re friends by the time you’re done," Chris said. Beyond their demeanor, Way-Mar's trained and thoughtful staff also ensured COVID safety protocols were a priority. The team entered the Sabean home through a backdoor entrance into the basement and also sealed the main staircase off with plastic. These precautions were not only beneficial for COVID reasons but also helped to minimize dirt and dust in the main portion of the home.

Reflecting on the renovation and the basement they now enjoy, Steve said in some ways he wishes they had tackled the project sooner. What for years was considered unused space has since become a sought-after area of the house. "Now we almost have to make a reservation list," Chris said. Needless to say, the changes that were made will be well cherished for years to come.
